One thing I’ve noticed lately, and my apologies if this has been going on for awhile, is that header regions on websites are becoming increasingly larger while content areas are being formatted in a smaller, more compartmentalized layout. By no means am I criticizing this practice. But I do wonder if others find these types of layout somewhat distracting. On the other hand, this may very well be a matter of my perception due to my using a 25″ monitor. So everything is HUGE on my screen. Reason I have such a large monitor is that it’s not uncommon for me to have some application open on one side of the screen and a browser open on the other side of the screen. It just makes it easier to work and preview something at the same time.
I definitely think header space has become recognized as prime real estate for attention grabbing graphics and promotions. The first thing to catch the eye on a website, whether in the header or in the main content area, now for most sites is what is relied upon to keep visitors looking. With advancements in programming capability, it should be interesting to see where this will evolve to in the future.
some wonderful and inspiring designs have been selected here. Thanks a lot for sharing. Personaly I think with all sites the navigation and the flow of the site is just as important as the design. For example an ecommerce web design would require an easy and pleasurable system to add items to a basket whilst browsing. And an good online portfolio of work would need to showcase work and enable the viewer to travel to other pieces efficiently and easily. After visiting a few of these sites it looks like most of them defiantly have this technique down to a T, with the combo of creative and attractive designs. Very inspiring. Mike

Nicely done. I need a new look for my novelty music site, it’s very basic and the design process didn’t make me feel like I was being involved. I will look at you header designs and think twice. Also you need to have a blog space and write something new about your site so that the cookies and meta-tags will update and draw attention.
